Micro-organisms are present in great numbers within and upon the human body, throughout the environment, and are critical for industrial biomanufacturing. Rice Bioengineering researchers are applying advances in Cellular and Molecular Engineering and Synthetic Biology to engineer gut bacteria that diagnose and treat disease, target and destroy cancerous tumors, detect toxins in the environment, and convert low-value feedstocks into drugs and source chemicals for industry.
