A.J. Walters, a Ph.D. student in Bioengineering (BIOE) at Rice has been awarded a three-year NSF Graduate Research Fellowship.
Walters is co-advised by Caleb Bashor, assistant professor of BIOE and of BioSciences, and Scott Olson, assistant professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center in the Department of Pediatric Surgery. His research focuses on engineering cell-based therapies with synthetic biology. He works on the systematic engineering of mesenchymal stem cells as therapies for the chronic neuroinflammation caused by traumatic brain injury.
