From Singapore, Nishant Verma applied to Rice after learning about Professor Marcia O’Malley’s robotics lab. “What really stood out to me was the peaceful campus, and the trees were great,” he said. “It was important to me to have a peaceful place in between classes to reflect on what I’d learned in the grander context of things.”
Pursuing a degree in bioengineering, Verma discovered his desire to build a career in health care as well as teach. “I started an outreach program here called For the Love of Learning,” he said. “It serves to share the love of education with K-12 students in the Houston area. We help them see that education can be joyful and can be something for them.”
Verma has been passionate about teaching since high school when he created a kit to help other students learn about electronics. When he got to Rice, he was able to expand that kit with the support from the Lie Idea Lab for Innovation & Entrepreneurship. “I think it’s the Rice community, the support, the sense of belief and the lack of pushiness that helps students grow their ideals and values with basis.”
