For nearly 30 years, we have jointly administered an M.D./Ph.D. Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) with Baylor College of Medicine (BCM). Students in the program receive an M.D. from BCM and a Ph.D. in bioengineering from Rice. During the first two years in the program, students typically complete the pre-clinical basic science curriculum at BCM prior to the Ph.D. course of study in bioengineering. After successfully defending their thesis and receiving their Ph.D., students return to BCM to complete the clinical curriculum. Many of these students are jointly advised by Rice bioengineering faculty and BCM clinical faculty.
The MSTP program serves as an important tool to facilitate translational research. Currently, there are nine bioengineering students in the program. To apply or learn more about the program, visit https://www.bcm.edu/education/programs/md-phd-program/admissions.
