AIChE honors Mikos with James E. Bailey Award

Antonios MikosAntonios Mikos, the Louis Calder Professor of Bioengineering and professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at Rice University, is the recipient of the 2017 James E. Bailey Award in Biological Engineering from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE).

In its citation, the AIChE said the annual award goes to “an individual who embodies the spirit of James Bailey, one that is a pioneer, a mentor, an innovator, an integrator of biology and engineering, a teacher, and whose achievements have provided a major impact to the field of biological engineering.”

Mikos’ lab focuses on the synthesis of new biomaterials for use as scaffolds in tissue engineering, as nonviral vectors for gene therapy and as carriers for controlled drug delivery. His work has resulted in the development of orthopedic, dental, cardiovascular, neurologic and ophthalmologic biomaterials, including synthetic biodegradable polymers used for guided tissue growth and the regeneration of bone to repair defects and injuries.

Mikos is director of the Center for Engineering Complex Tissues, the Center for Excellence in Tissue Engineering and the J.W. Cox Laboratory for Biomedical Engineering. He earned a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Purdue University in 1988 and joined the Rice faculty in 1992.

He has published more than 550 papers and has been cited more than 62,500 times, according to Google Scholar. He holds 28 patents and is the editor of 15 books and author of the textbook Biomaterials: The Intersection of Biology and Materials Science.

Mikos is a member of the National Academy of Engineering; the National Academy of Medicine; the Academy of Medicine, Engineering and Science of Texas; and the Academy of Athens. He is a founding fellow of the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society, and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, the Biomedical Engineering Society, the Controlled Release Society, the International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Science and Engineering and the National Academy of Inventors.

Mikos will receive the award at the annual meeting of the AIChE, Oct. 29-Nov. 3, in Minneapolis, where he will present the James E. Bailey Award Lecture. Bailey, who died in 2001, earned his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Rice in 1969.
