About the Department

Rice BioengineeringToday, the field of bioengineering has exploded into a vast rapidly expanding world. To remain competitive, leading scientists must acquire a solid background in multiple areas of study to analyze ideas, see an even bigger picture, generate novel ideas and engineer better products and devices. At the Rice University Department of Bioengineering, researchers and students are transforming what was once thought of as science fiction into reality. Our faculty members' diverse research interests are focused on establishing engineering principles and developing cutting-edge technologies in:


  • Computational and Theoretical Bioengineering,
  • Systems and Synthetic Biology, and
  • Tissue Engineering and Biomechanics.
  • Our Mission

    Success in this environment also requires constant reevaluation, evolution, resources, and collaboration. The Rice University Department of Bioengineering mission is three pronged:

    • To perform basic, applied, and translational research and education at the interface of biology and engineering;
    • To build partnerships that identify important problems, develop and translate bioengineering solutions, and train the next generation of leaders in bioengineering;
    • To solve pressing global health care problems and address challenges in biotechnology.

    The Department of Bioengineering is housed in the BioScience Research Collaborative (BRC), a new 477,000 square-foot building located across the street from the Texas Medical Center. Construction of the BRC was completed in July 2009, and its interior gives an open and modern feel as it provides ample space for some of the best research minds in the world to work together and solve a broad spectrum of complex problems in science and medicine.
